About Me

I’m Azadeh. I was born and raised in Iran, and in my late twenties, I began moving across the globe—living in Dubai, Prague, Washington D.C., and now dividing my time between Los Angeles and Paris. These cultural shifts have deeply shaped my artistic journey and the stories I tell. I work as a theatre director, performer, dramaturge, and playwright—bringing together lived experience, formal training, and a deep curiosity about identity and human connection. At the heart of my practice is a simple but powerful desire: to understand others, and to help others understand me. Theatre has become the language through which I express personal and political questions around gender, power, silence, memory, and belonging. It allows me to share the culture I come from—my language, my history—with audiences who may not otherwise have the opportunity to encounter it. My role shifts depending on the project and its core idea. Regardless of the title—director, performer, or playwright—what remains essential to me is presence and truth. Even when we play roles on stage, I believe we must stay true to the here and now of the performance. That honesty creates a rare kind of intimacy—one that invites the audience not just to watch, but to feel with us. Theatre has allowed me to carry stories—my own and others’—across continents and cultures, and to meet people in that vulnerable, transformative space. In addition to directing a range of productions, I’ve written and performed several autobiographical plays in Europe and the U.S. over the past decade. These works unfold in four phases: remembering, writing, rehearsing, and performing. The process is deeply healing. It transforms raw, subjective emotion into something that can be held, examined, and ultimately shared. As the performer steps back from her pain, the audience steps closer—and in that space, something universal begins to emerge. Beyond the stage, I’ve created radio plays, interviews, and roundtable discussions that explore human resilience and resistance within various social and historical contexts. I also lead workshops in storytelling for self-development and devised performance, helping others tap into their voices and narratives. My work has been presented across the Middle East, Europe, and North America, and is recognized for its intimate, layered, and cross-cultural approach to storytelling. I invite you to explore my work, attend a performance, or take part in a future workshop. Whether through words, images, or shared silences, I’m interested in creating spaces where stories matter—and where people feel seen.
